The Corps trains Chicago citizens to run local environmental service projects and aims to create a broad base of volunteers to help make Chicago the “greenest city in the nation.”
Chicagoland Environmental Network
Listings of environment-related jobs and volunteer opportunities around Chicago. Sadly, many of the jobs seems to be very much “Chicagoland” and are out in the suburbs. But many of the volunteer positions are right in the city.

Give Some Time (Or Get a Job) – For all you who don’t live where I do.
Similar to NPO but international. Also has searchable event/job/volunteer listings. You can create a volunteer profile which can be browsed by organizations looking for more help. Likewise, if you work with a group, you can create an organizational profile to be browsed by potential volunteers.
A site that helps link nonprofits with other nonprofits and also link them to other volunteers. The group runs a whole suite of other topical sites, such as Shelters.org, RenewableResources.org, etc., with info on organizations in your area working on the given topic, plus lists of web forums, blogs, and the like to help you learn more about the topic. It looks like currently all the volunteer links redirect you to VolunteerMatch, but the other info on their site is still worth visiting.
Activism on the Web
Participate is a resource to help you get involved in part of a broader campaign for the big problems you might care about, using recent movies that address socially pertinent issues to both inspire and inform you beforehand. This might be global warming (An Inconvenient Truth), the government’s dependence on oil (Syriana), or the sexual harassment and abuse of women (The North Country).
